Our History :

The first band club in Birzebbuga was found in August 1957 under the name of St. Peter Musical Society. Its first committee included Mr. Eddie Paris, President, Mr. Anthony C. Naizer, Secretary and Mr. Emmanuel Debattista, Treasurer. Rev. Can Richard Attard was the first Spiritual Director, with the Band under the direction of Mro. Charles Zammit with Mr. Emmanuel Galea, his Assistant.

The Band made its first appearance in public on 25th August 1957 with a march along the roads of Birzebbuga and afterwards with a musical program in Pretty Bay. Before the Band started the program, Rev. Joseph Minuti, Parish Priest, blessed all those taking part and in his short address, congratulated every success to the newly founded band and hoped to progress in the future.

The first years were a bit dull for the Society, because it used to share everything with St. Peter Sports Club, since they both shared same Committee, members, premises and income. In spite of all this, new musical instruments were purchased and new musicians emerged. In fact, in 1958, the first five new musicians of the Band were Lawrence Gauci, James Gauci, Charles Grixti, Anthony Tabone and Anthony Waithe. In 1960, Mr. Emmanuel Galea, Assistant Band Director, wrote the first band hymn dedicated to St. Peter`s Band.

The problems persisted and the Society seized to operate temporarily between 1968 and 1970. But in January 1970, things started rolling again. After a year of intensive work to collect fresh members, a General Meeting was held on the 21st March 1971 at the local Catholic Action premises, where a new Administrative Committee was formed under the Presidency pf Mr. Carmelo Polidano, Mr. Martin Zammit, Secretary, and Mr. Emmanuel Galea, Treasurer. The Band was this time under the direction of the young Band Director, Mro. Carmelo Galea L.Mus.L.C.M

Immediate preparations were taken in hand to have its own premises and in 8th July 1972, the President of the Malta Band Club Association, Mr. Carmelo Delia, officially inaugurated the first premises in St. Edward Street. Once again Rev. Joseph Minuti, Parish Priest, blessed the new premises.

Things kept on rolling to the good, as in 1976, after intensive research carried out by Mr. Emmanuel Galea and Mr. Martin Zammit, on the 1st February 1976, in an Extraordinary General Meeting, it was unanimously resolved that the place “Ye Olde Beams” – formerly known as The Red Lion Bar – situated in the midst of the Church Square and ideal for local Band Club, was to be officially the new premises, a place still occupied today. Five months after, in July 1976, special celebrations were done, with Mr. Emmanuel Galea, then President, officially opening the premises, with Rev. Joseph Minuti for the third time blessing the place. On this occasion the Band, under Mro. Carmelo Galea out a special musical program, after which a reception was held for the distinguished guests and those present.

In February 1981, Mro. Carmelo Galea resigned from his post, as he wanted to emigrate to Australia and instead Mro. Frank Galea was chosen as the new Band Director. On this occasion, the latter donated his musical work “ Cantata San Pietro” to the Club.

In 1982, the Society celebrated its 25th Anniversary from its foundations, but due to construction work being carried out at the Club, the Committee decided that the occasion be remembered with the erection of a new story to the premises, so that the Club will have a decent prominent place in the midst of the square and will be remembered with this vivid monument. When, two years later, the façade was completed, a new frontispiece was erected, the work of which was carried out and donated by Mr. Michael Farrugia.

In May 1986, President Emmanuel Galea resigned from his post, due to health reasons and a new President Mr. Saviour Fenech was elected instead in the annual General Meeting. At the same meeting Mr. Emmanuel Galea was nominated as Honorary President of the Club. That same year in August a group of eight youngsters formed the Youth Section within the Club to look after the interests of young members and to carry out various works for the benefit of the Club.

In July 1987 all the work on the premises was completed and the Committee decided to organize proper celebrations to commemoratethe Club’s 30th Anniversary. The newly formed Youth Section took charge and worked themselves new decorative and electrical frameworks for the Club’s façade. Threeyears later in February 1990 a group of seven female members formed between them another new section Women’s Section to organize activities for members and to raise funds in aid of the Club’s necessities.

In the Annual General meeting of 1990 it was resolved that thename of the Society be changed to “ Ghaqda Musikali Birzebbuga – banda San Pietru Fil- Ktajjan – A. D. 1957 “ to protect its interests and to strengthen its position in the village.

The aim of each band Club in Malta is to make someday its Annual Musical Concert at the Manoel Theatre in Valletta. This event took place on 23rd

November 1991 and St.Peter’s Band carried out a Musical Program in which participated the Mezzo-Soprano Ms.Lucienne Cassar, a member herself. Mro. Frank Galea directed the concert in full under the patronage of H.E. Dr. Cenzu Tabone President of Malta. The program was carried out on behalf of the Band Clubs association on the occasion of the feast of St. Cecilia patron saint of music and musicians.

As time went by, new extension of the club was being considered. Mr. Joseph Magro an architect from Zejtun was consulted and offered his service free of charge. The work done consisted of building a Garage and toilet facilities at Ground Floor and a new hall on top, at the back part of the Club. The work was completed in 1994 and the new hall was named after the late Emmanuel Galea ex-Honorary President, ex- President, ex-assistant Band Director and a great benefactor to the Club. Mro. Carmelo Galea, ex-Band Director being the son of Emmanuel Galea did the inauguration of this hall during the 1994 feastly week, when he was in Malta for holidays from Australia.

In April 1995 the execitive Committee of the Club terminated the employment of Mro. Frank Galea as Band Director and appointedinstead Mr. Vincent Bonnici with the effect from 1st May 1995. He usedto teach woodwind instruments with the Club since 1990. That same year on Christmas day, a marble plague was unveiled at the Club’s entrance hall to commemorate Twenty Five Years of Secretary service to the Club of Mr. Martin Zammit, who unveiled it himself and Rev.Joseph Berry Spiritual Director blessed it. Following this in January 1986 Mr. Zammit did not contest the election in the Annual General Meeting and Mr. Alexander Caruana was elected instead. In the same meeting Mr. Martin zammit was acclaimed by the members present as Honorary President, AD Vitam.

The year 1996 was a busy one. The Executive Committee decided to make a new bandstand on the design of Mr. Alexander Caruana Secretary. The work was all carried out by members, especially from the Youth Section, and was erected for the first time and used on Saturday’s Musical Program of that same year. During the same period a new Commission was established to take care of works to be carried out at the Club in connection with the changing of new facade. Once again, Mr. Joseph Magro the architect offered his services.

At the Annual General Meeting held on February 1997 Mr. Saviour Fenech did not contest for the post of President and Mr, Alexander Caruana was elected instead, with the post of secretary being filled by Mr. Keith Zammit. During the same meeting Mr. Saviour Fenech was appointed Honorary President with the full approval of those present.

In 1997 the Club commemorated its 40th Anniversary from its foundation. Th the end of the Saturday’s musical program held on the eve of St. Peter’s feast Mr. Alexander Caruana President announced that the permit from the local authorities to change the Club’s façade had been approved and published that same week. The design of the new façade were carried out on suggestions by Mr. Alexander Caruana and approved by Mr. Joseph Magro the architect. The work was immediately taken in hand with the usual participation of the Youth Section who helped the contractor Mr. Joseph Bonnici together with other members, all under the constant supervision of Messrs. Carmelo Attard and Carmelo Schembri a retired master mason. The decorative stonework was all done by Mr. Michael Farrugia who later on together with Mr. Carmelo Schembri were appointed both as Honorary Presidents of the Club, as recognition of their intensive work. Actual construction work was completed in July 2000.

In the Annual General Meeting of October 1999 Mr. Keith Zammit did not contest for the post of Secretary and instead Mr.Mario Dalli was chosen to fill in the post. Two years after in October 2001 Mr. Alexander Caruana vacated the post of President which was filled by Mr. Tarcisio Caruana.

In the meantime the work at the Club progressed constantly. As expected Mr. Carmelo Attard and his collegue Mr. Carmelo Schembri continued with various other works with the help from many other volunteers, especially from the Youth Section. Then on 2nd June 2002 it was announced the sudden death of Mr. Carmelo Attard, for whom a funeral service was carried out with the participation of the Band. In an Extraordinary General Meeting held late Mr. David Grixti was appointed new Treasurer for the rest of the administrative year.
